How do I turn my fruit into life points?

You have to make a plea for fruit and then you can heal yourself. I guess it’s a way to keep you accountable — you can’t quietly just put yourself back to ten life points!

I am in a passionate, torrid love affair with pomegranates, which I just discovered last week. What do I need to know? Is there a pomegranate season? Can I remove the arils and freeze them for later? Can I marry them?

:) MaryAnn

:-)

:) MaryAnn

You can buy pomegranate juice, you know.
If you buy it from a healthfood store, you can get the real, unadulterated stuff. That way, you can fill your whole mouth with the taste, all at once. And over and over again. :-D

And there’s at least one version of pomegranate liqueur.
I think there’s a tart one, and a more sweet one.

Instead of cutting the fruit open, have you tried breaking open the peel, and then, manually and carefully, separating the sections?
The structure of it is really interesting, and beautiful.
… how the arils (wow, Susan knows the term “aril” already!) are arranged in little compartments.

Enjoy your love affair!

:) MaryAnn

I’m not sure if you could actually “marry” them, but I think you could probably come up with some ideas for, ummm, some other things you could do with them.
You know… like… on one of those days when the kids are all out of the house, say.

:) EvaC

Eating them in the bathtub?

:) Kimberly W

At some stores like trader joes and whole foods you can buy the seeds (arils?) all ready to eat. I shell out for that because I don’t like the work of getting them out. The easiest way I’ve found to do that is by doing it all underwater in a bowl. You score the flesh and kind of work them out with your fingers. They are delicious!

:) EvaC

Sometimes Costco carries loose pomegranate arils, too.

:) EvaC

Oh, and Trader Joe’s carries chocolate-covered ones!

:) MaryAnn

Now where is Susan, with all this going on?

Actually, I was at a family gathering without my essential phone. I had left it in the car. The gathering was a bday celeb for 24-year-old niece to whom I gave a …. Drum roll please … Pomegranate. I wrote a thing about how the pomegranate takes more work than, say, an orange, but has such an amazing payoff and then parlayed that into a wish for her to have beautiful, fragrant, wonderful, satisfying experiences this year. They asked me to show them how to open it so I did a little cooking show demo in the kitchen which was fun.

Blackcurrants in their juice.
Comes in a big jar, imported from Poland. I’ve found it in only one grocery store, in a smaller city/town where husband’s mother lives, about 45 minutes from us in the major city.

SUSAN,

I can vouch for it:
YES, you can DEFinitely marry a pomegranate!

And in other news:
This past week,
To two different parties,
I brought bowls of pomegranate seeds I’d extracted.
Some folk loved them, others cared not.

Not long ago,
I went online
to see if there’s a best way
to get to those juicy little devils
without destruction and mayhem.

I found:
Martha Stewart’s way
destroys the seeds and puts juice everywhere.

The underwater way
doesn’t really solve much of anything at all except that juice doesn’t get everywhere.

So far, the best way (although the video’s arrogant title says it’s the “correct” way… I think it just works best, for me)
and I’ve opened and eaten many, many, many a pomegranate, is:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1iHbSzM63Hs

:) MaryAnn

Wonderful video!
It shows the little sections and compartments!
And it keeps the seeds all nice and whole, and not dripping in water!

It’s great to know there’s a systematic way of doing this, that doesn’t wreak havoc.

:) susan taylor

Thanks, rachael! I guess poms and I are natural pals because that video is the way I do it! With the first one, my son’s girlfriend cut it in half horizontally and we dug out all the rails with spoons. Talk about a mess. I knew there had to be a better way. With each one, I enjoy seeing how neatly I can get them all out. Think I will try her tip about cutting the top though. I have been cutting too much off.

:) MaryAnn

Susan – that was Brooke who posted the video.

Yeah, cutting the pomegranate right through is a travesty, IMHO.
Not to even mention the mess, when you butcher it like that.

I love looking at how the seeds are arranged, and all packed in tightly together – and that FABULOUS colour!
Opening it as in the video, keeps all that intact.

:) susan taylor

Brooke! I’m sorry!! My eyes were covered in pomegranate shaped stars as I admired your idea of taking rails to a party! Thank you, Brooke.

:) susan taylor

Arils, not rails. Helpful auto-incorrect always on the job.

:) Brooke

Susan, I knew you were addressing my post… no worries.

Now, “arils,” is a new word for me and thanks for that.

Mary Ann, the lusciousness of the bursting red insides, the seeds just crammed in there… what stunning beauty, I so agree.

I want to heal someone, but I don’t want to give up my life points. They don’t seem to be asking for fruit and I’m not sure if I simply gave them fruit if they’d use it. Maybe. They only have 3 but you need 4 to heal yourself. So, they might use it.

Anyhow, I have tons of fruit to give and no one to give them to. Where’s the fruit plea button? I gave up searching on page 5. I’ll check back next time I’m on, but would have liked to click the button to find all the pleas.

So, team strategy wise: given that as far as I can tell, no one on the team needs fruit right now, is there a benefit to self fruiting (to bring me up to 10 life points) or fruiting on other people’s pleas (if they’ve already reached a safe point?)

As in: do we get more personal or team points for ending with more life points?

Bing cherries are in season right now and are at their low price for the year. I recently discovered how DIVINE frozen cherries are. I rinse them and put them in ziploc bags in the freezer. They can be de-stemmed and/or pitted, but I do neither. Easy as can be, and a wonderfully refreshing treat. 1.5 cups of cherries is 110 calories. Just so good.

:) Bridget

I freeze grapes and cherries, and love to eat them. You know, Susan, when you eat those 110 calories, you’re not just getting carbs and vitamins, you’re getting a boost of high-quality hydration AND a powerful antioxidant punch (read: anti-inflammatory!) Keep up the great work :-D

Watermelon is 93% water by weight. Hence to provide 20 calories per 100 g. half the calories provided by fruits lighter.

Despite being a food light, contains considerable quantities of vitamin C and B vitamins, without whose presence the body’s cells would be unable to produce energy.

Hi everyone, I have extra fruit…can I use this to increase my life points? I thought I heard I could trade it in, but can’t remember how that’s done. Thank you for the help!

:) Merrill

Hi Shawn- You have to make a plea for fruit…then you can heal yourself. FYI…it takes four pieces of fruit to heal yourself for each Life Point, versus two pieces of fruit when healing someone else. :-)

:) Paula Gregovich

WOrd or what Merrill said ;-)

:) Shawn

Ok, will do!

:) gowithGrace

And you can only make a plea for fruit if you’ve dropped below 10 Life Points.
Futhermore, you can use extra fruit and Life points to connect with players directly if they are hooked up to email (find that option to the right on the game wall.

Click on a players name an it will take you to their profile. You’ll see what I mean under the players picture.

fyi: more than 10 LPs don’t really count for wonderfulness. Less than 1 diminishes the team’s standings.

And now is a good time to invite other players to join our team if they are not already on a team.

Question for you guys: do you buy your groceries for the week all at once? I’m finding it hard to eat much fruit towards the end of the week because we do all our shopping on Sunday and don’t do much shopping during the week. Do you get fresh fruit and veg mid-way through the week?

:) MerylNZ

We pretty much shop for food as we need it and have a supermarket right across the road. I also don’t eat fruit as much as I should and often have to bin the last couple of bananas or lemons. Bad Jen.

You could try having some canned fruit in light juice for the end of the week? And snap frozen veges are apparently as good as fresh since they still have all their goodies in them :D

:) jenn_k

i get a bag of produce at the beginning of the week and then make a second trip on Wed or Thursday to pick up more for the rest of the week. Sometimes I buy enough for the whole week on the weekend but find that the fruit tends to spoil by the end of the week.

Tip for eating enough fruit: Instead of trying to think of eating enough fruit at home I love to take a whole net of mandarines/tangerines to work. 1 kg lasts for about a week. If one needs a quick break or has a craving for chocolate (which happens to me definitely at least once a day) one can always eat a tangerine.
