I have a 9 and 11 year old — if you do, what is their bedtime?

What time do you go to bed usually? How do you quiet your thoughts to prepare for sleep?

:) Fruitful

Hmm, I’m still struggling with getting to bed at the right time (this week it’s been 11-ish, 12-ish, 1-ish, 9-ish!). So don’t listen to me on that.

Quieting thoughts: for me, this is achieved more so by what I do during the day than by bedtime techniques. Since I reestablished my meditation practice (which I do in the morning and the afternoon) I don’t have much trouble falling asleep.

I also need to avoid stimulants (coffee, tea, dark chocolate) during the day, or at least early enough that they aren’t in my system at bedtime. Unfortunately it takes me about 12 hours, so if I have it in the afternoon my sleep is affected. You might be different of course.

I’ve installed a (free) program called f.lux on my computer to tint my screen orange at night. This stops the eyes/brain being artificially stimulated by the blue light frequencies of the screen. I do need to try to stay off the computer at night for best effect though.

A bedtime ritual tells my brain to wind down. I wash my face, teeth etc, put on lotions, turn down the lights, get a hot water bottle, put on my Zeo headband (a device that monitors brainwaves while you sleep, to tell you how you’re sleeping – only been doing this for a month but it’s part of the ritual now), and read a book for a while. Bedtime routines really help.

A while ago I couldn’t wind down, so I closed my eyes and counted things I was glad about/grateful for, playing a game that I was going to get to 300 or something. I never seemed to get past 20-something before falling asleep! That put me to sleep feeling really happy too.

Alarm clock set for 0.5-1h before the intended bed time really helps. And you don’t have to just drop everything, ’cause you still have 1/2 hour :)

Keep a gratitude journal and write in it nightly before bed. I like to list 3 things or encounters i had today, and one thing I saw, touched, tasted, heard, smelled, or felt that was beautiful today.

Ironically you begin to consciously look for gratitude, thankfulness, and beauty all day just waiting to write it down in my journal. I look forward each day to becoming more observant and letting beauty wash over me instead of manufacturing something.

…. okay, If I have a rule that says “Get 6 hours of sleep at least 5 nights a week”… and the note to myself says that I will go to sleep between “9 and 11pm”… If I got the right amount of sleep, but went to sleep later than 11pm, did I actually do it?

“I have nothing to do, so I stay up late doing it.” — David Miller, AWOL on the Appalachian Trail

Came across that quote, and it rang true. That’s something I tend to do all too often, which is why I have to have a bedtime rule. It’s very rare that I manage to get anything productive done after 11:30 p.m. anyway. Not that every minute of the day has to be productive, just vegging is good sometime, but that’s probably a sign that I don’t need to stay up until 3 a.m.

(The book is good, too; I’m about halfway through it and enjoying it quite a bit. Free in the Kindle lending library for Amazon Prime customers.)

Good quote. I find if I get too tired I can miss my “window” for going to bed. Just Googled the book and wrote “Wol on the Appalachian Trail,” wch is a completely different image. I don’t think he’d be up for it.

I have real problems waking up in the morning. I know it’s because I go to bed too late but I really can’t handle it the normal way. Can you give me some tips on “Go to bed early” and “get up early” topic?

:) Fubox

Quick tip only, since it is past my bedtime. I find it impossible to get up early, but going to bed and sleep early is much easier with good “sleep hygiene”. Google sleep hygiene and follow the tips there. They are evidence-based.

Set a reminder on your phone that says “GO TO BED!!!” Mine goes off about an hour before I should hit the sack if I want to get 7-8 hours of sleep.

Thanks!. I think I’m on target – I usually get up at 5:30 AM and it says to be asleep by 10. I’m in bed by 9:30 so that’s good. Very interesting!

F.lux

Staring at your computer screen after dark? Research shows that the monitor’s light can mess with your sleep. This app goes beyond simple dimming and adjusts color temperature to match ambient conditions—cool blue-and-white by day, warm yellows at night.

WIRED Mac, PC, and Linux. Dead-simple controls.

TIRED Changes color profile, so not ideal for graphic designers. Nighttime settings are tough to dial in.

Smart to remember. We were born in the cave, or at least our ancestors were. No screen lights to disturb our circadian rhythms, our sleep patterns. Makes so much sense to switch off the screen. Read a book.

I find it really helps if I avoid computer or TV time for about an hour before bed. I try to read a book or listen to music instead.
