I also loved Johnny D’s idea, and am paying him the most sincere compliment.

Drink at least 51 glasses of water

I had this same rule in March, but with a goal of 35 glasses. In March I also had a limit soda rule, which I’ve abandoned in April. I’ve decided that for the moment, getting more water in me is more important than watching my soda intake, but I’m increasing my water rule so that I won’t be tempted to fall back into old habits. I am not sure how I settled on “51” as a number, however.

Go to bed before 11pm at least 4 days a week

This is a new rule, and is going to be a tough one. But I have a five month old baby who is still getting me up in the middle of the night to nurse, and a toddler who wakes up at 7am rain or shine, so I need more sleep! Enough said.

Walk at least 8 miles a week

I had this rule in March, but have increased the mileage. Last month I also had the “walk the dog four times a week” rule but I have dropped that as I learned that if something kept me from walking, I’d get dinged twice, and the dog walking thing has gotten more ingrained now, I just need to walk longer.

Floss every day

I used to be really good about this. Right after the baby was born, I lost the habit, as there were nights I was just too tired to floss. It shouldn’t be hard to get back into the groove, though.

Take a photograph every day

This is my custom rule. It’s part of my effort to remind myself that I have more going on with me than taking care of babies, and keep that creative expression part of me going.

Allow red meat and pork one day a week

This is a new rule for April. I have no idea how hard it’s going to be follow- I don’t think I consume all that much meat, but it would be good to be mindful about it.

Allow white flour three days a week

This is a new rule for April. I think it is going to be one of the most challenging rules. I like to bake, and I like to eat what I bake. I had contemplated a “only eat treats that are homemade” rule but decided that would be too easy to wander off the plan.

Do weight training at least three days a week

This is another new rule, and also likely to be a challenge at first. Once upon a time I was a gym rat and loved the strength training regimen. The challenge has been for me to build time for it in my schedule after having kids. I’m fairly certain that once it becomes a habit it won’t be hard to keep up.

Allow two alcoholic drinks a week

To be honest, I threw this in to have a kaizen rule. I’m not much of a drinker, and after being pregnant and not drinking I’ve turned into a real lightweight, so sticking to this rule won’t be too hard. But it’s also good to pay attention to it and keep it a good habit, right?

I’m also a copycat- I loved Johnny D’s idea.

Take a multivitamin at least 5 days a week
I’ve been meaning to do this for at least a year. I have had multivitamins sitting there, along with vitamin D supplements that I really really should be taking.

Cook dinner 5 days a week
This is a carry-over from last month. I did pretty well with it, but I still need the incentive to not let me avoid making dinner.

Allow 10 cups of coffee or tea a week
Around the middle of the month, in order to keep up with my water intake, I cut out my afternoon coffee. Now I’d really like to keep it to one in the morning. I gave myself a bit of room for error so I wouldn’t feel terrible if I slipped or wanted an afternoon coffee on the weekend.

Bring lunch to work 4 days a week
This was really hard work, but saved us a ton of money this month. I got really creative by the end of the month- I started doing a salad every day, and I’d really like to keep it up. I felt way better around 3 pm than I ever have.

Drink at least 23 glasses of water a week
I had no problem with 2 glasses a day last month, so I decided to push for 3 or 4 this month.

Do household chores for 20 minutes every day
This kept my house gorgeous, keeping it on my list for habit forming.

Floss at least 3 days a week
I haven’t flossed regularly for an embarrassingly long time.

Exercise for 30 minutes at least 2 days a week
I haven’t taken the time to exercise in years. I used to not own a car, and that helped make sure it wasn’t an issue, but it’s time to stop making excuses about exercising.

Drive my car at least 1 day a week
A few years ago, after driving across the country twice, I developed a lot of anxiety about driving. My very kind partner took it upon himself to see that I get everywhere I need to go, but my therapist thought I should make an effort to work past the anxiety. So, here’s my goal to start.

Eat breakfast at least 6 days a week
I started doing this in a half assed way in March, and I found I felt a million times better when I ate breakfast.

I’m going to be a copycat.

Wake up before 7:20am 5 days a week – when I was younger, my mother made my sister get me out of bed because she (my mother) was tired of doing it. (I’d throw shoes at whomever the task fell upon.) I don’t toss footwear anymore, but I still despise getting up in the morning. This one will be tough.

Exercise for 45 minutes at least 4 days a week – I’m going to caveat this one by saying that if I decide to do my exercise by jogging, I only have to do it for 22 1/2 minutes. (I can’t jog for 45 minutes at a pop. Yet.) I figure since my roller derby practices are 2 hours long, it’ll all even itself out.

Allow snacking 3 times a week – this will be the one that breaks me. I snack constantly.

Floss every day – those little floss picker thingies are wonderful. (Plus I have a dentist appointment in a few weeks.)

Drink at least 56 glasses of water a week – this was what my goal for March was supposed to be, but my math skills left me at a crucial moment.

Track your spending every day – for when I buy things with cash. I hope to use the voice recorder on my phone to help with this.

Allow 5 cups of coffee or tea a week – I bring my own coffee to work, so I’ll just have to bring one cup a day instead of two. (I seem to do okay with no coffee on the weekends.)

Wear my tooth guard thingy at night every day – I always forget to do this if I go to bed late.

If I end this month with 1 or more life points, I will…be most pleased. If I end the month with at least 5 life points, I will buy myself a Fitbit. I love gadgets and gizmos and I’ve wanted something to track my sleep patterns for a while now.

If I end this month with less than 1 life point, I will…have to prepare the roller derby league’s tax returns before the May 15 deadline (as opposed to the August 15 deadline we’ve been granted). I am a procrastinator.

Not quite April yet, but I’m going to go ahead and kick off the April wall. Following Johnny D’s example, I’m annotating my rules for April. I did well with my three rules in March, but I may be a little nuts going from three rules to ten. We’ll see how it goes.

:) DevilsAdvocate

Climb 3 flights of stairs at least 5 days a week (Custom “Do” rule)
Same as in March. Conveniently, my cubicle is three floors up from the ground floor, so this amounts to climbing the stairs rather than taking the elevator at work once per day. Unlike March, I’m taking a few Fridays off, so I’ll have to find some other stairs to climb a couple of times. For stairs for which flights are not well-defined, such as on a hiking trail, I’m defining 20 steps to be one flight.

:) DevilsAdvocate

Exercise for 40 minutes at least 3 days a week
Up from 2 days a week last month. My personal rule here is to either do something that gets the heart rate up, or if it doesn’t raise it that much (hiking, where I’m more interested in just enjoying being in nature and not concerned about setting a pace, plus trails in central Indiana are not exactly strenuous for the most part) I have to do it for at least 90 minutes rather than 40. Stuff that does get my heart rate up is a brisk walk, typically just around my apartment complex, or (don’t laugh) Dance Dance Revolution for the Wii. I think I have trouble sticking to many types of exercise just because I find them incredibly boring, but DDR is better because I find it mentally as well as physically challenging.

:) DevilsAdvocate

Do weight training at least 3 days a week
This is a bit misleading—I’m actually shoehorning something only somewhat related into this rule, since we don’t have multiple custom Do rules yet, and this was the closest I could find. I’m going to be trying the one hundred pushups program. Which I started once before, but quit after three weeks or so. No illusions here that I’ll be progressing very fast, especially since I’ll have to start with knee push-ups, and I know that I’ll likely have to repeat weeks.

:) DevilsAdvocate

Allow red meat and pork 1 day a week
Same as in March. I’m amused that it explicitly says “and pork.” Regardless of what the National Pork Board would have you believe, the meat of any mammal, including pigs, is red meat. I found this fairly easy to stick to, although it means if I’m making something with red meat at home the leftovers will probably have to be frozen rather than merely refrigerated.

:) DevilsAdvocate

Eat raw fruit at least 5 days a week
Hopefully this will replace some of the less healthful sides I tend to eat with meals otherwise, but I’m also allowing it as a snack if necessary (see below).

:) DevilsAdvocate

Allow snacking 2 days a week
This will be a tough one for me—just since deciding to do this rule, I’ve become more consciously aware of how much I snack, and was kind of surprised to realize just how much I do. Also, when I’m eating a meal at home, I have a tendency to eat what I planned, realize I’m still hungry, then eat something more and mentally consider it part of the meal. Therefore, for the purposes of this rule, in eating meals (especially at home) I’ll require myself to decide what I’m going to eat before I begin eating, and anything I add on after I’ve eaten that will count as snacking. But I’m also allowing myself two exceptions: fresh fruit, if I haven’t already had fresh fruit that day, to satisfy the “eat fruit” rule; and pickles are also excepted from this rule. (Only 10 calories a spear—and I initially thought it was 5, which was what the label said, until I also noticed it said “Serving size: ½ spear.” Half a spear?? Really?!!)

:) DevilsAdvocate

Floss at least 6 days a week
I’m also requiring myself to use a fluoride rinse after flossing for the purposes of this rule.

:) DevilsAdvocate

Go to bed before midnight 4 days a week
This may be another tough one. I’ve never been very good about going to bed on time, being more of a “go to bed whenever I get tired” person. Which comes back to bite me the next morning far too often. I’ll try to do this on nights when I work or otherwise have to be up at a reasonable hour the next day, but it will still count if it’s not. Maybe I also need a “no caffeine after 2 p.m.” rule since that seems to be correlated with me staying up too late, but I’ll reserve that for a future month if I still need to.

:) DevilsAdvocate

Do household chores for 30 minutes at least 4 days a week
I have a bad habit of leaving chores for the weekend, so this will require me to do some of them during the week. Also I’m hoping this is enough time to get me out of the rut of just doing the Big Two chores (dishes and laundry) and get some of the other things done that I tend to put off.

:) DevilsAdvocate

Do meaningful work at least 2 days a week
Although the rule doesn’t specify a time, I’m setting this at 30 minutes each time also. “Meaningful work” for me will comprise the sort of productive work I need to do on the computer. (Non-computer work falls under the “chores” rule for my purposes.) Things such as going through email and organizing literally years of photos that I haven’t gone through yet. “Meaningful work” does not include checking Google Reader, Facebook, MetaFilter, or even HealthMonth.

Bets & Promises:

If I end the month with at least 1 life point, I will…
Remove/relax rules for May (with a vacation coming up). Also, I will either be totally amazed with myself, or, more likely, will be very grateful to the people who gave me fruit.
