I’ve been sleeping badly again. I was in a foul mood when I got up. I went for my scheduled training run, and over the course of 25 minutes gradually started to feel like a human being again. That was good. Work has been kind of stressful lately too. I managed to skip out a little early as I was going to give blood! Actually, I was going to give plasma. The first time I tried, they couldn’t get the needle seated well enough in either arm. (You need it in there properly because they take the blood, centrifuge out the plasma, and push the red blood cells back in.) So I spent 60 minutes filling out the papers and getting my iron tested and waiting for my turn until finally they called me to my chair. The RN had one feel of my tiny veins and blanched. “I’m going to get Flora,” she said. “If Flora can’t do it, nobody can.” Well, FLORA COULDN’T. I got stuck (again) in both arms (again) and got totally bruised (again) but neither one would work. Flora was terribly apologetic. Oddly, I was actually near tears. It was just so frustrating. All that time and effort and pain and adrenaline WASTED with nothing to show for it. So I ended the day in a foul mood after all. :(

I used to sell plasma when I was in grad school, and would often have problems of the type you describe – my veins are pretty deep. Sometimes they couldn’t get it in. Sometimes they could, but then it would jam up or something during the return cycle. So I can sympathize.

I just donate blood now, and when they asked me at the blood center if I wanted to donate plasma once, I specifically declined on the basis of my bad experiences in the past.

I have blood taken out of the vein on the top of my hand. No one can get anything out of my arm without terrible bruising (and cussing.) See if you have a nice bulgy vein on one of your hands the next time you get stuck. It looks worse to watch but it hurts much less that stabbing the poor unwilling arm veins.

:) kanata

I’ve had to pretty much stop donating blood unless a certain nurse is there as no one can find my veins as they are quite deep and like to hide. I feel your frustration at getting poked and prodded.

I need some encouraging words…totally flubbed an “introducing myself and my dissertation project” thing this morning with an important prof, and felt like a total idiot. Also drank way too much coffee this morning so I’m feeling ill and on-edge. Ick. :(

:) Ieva

Hey, the professor has seen worse most likely :) My guess is that if your dissertation project is good it will be fine, and if it’s not, well, the important prof can probably give you hints about improving it?
Anyhow, this is done! You don’t need to stress about it any more, right?

:) Brooke

That “on edge” from coffee is tough for me… had to drop caffeine but boy do I go nuts with chocolate at times.

Ya know what I say about “totally flubbing” *any*thing?
SO WHAT!
I keep living.
And if I keep living, I keep learning.
And living and learning, both, involve mistakes.

From the wee bit I know of you,
“total idiot” would not enter my
mind if I was looking for a way
to describe you.

Thoughtful, generous, light, friendly, serious…
those would be what would come to my mind, Sara,
in describing you.

This whole month has felt off-kilter and off-track. This past Sunday things got totally derailed, the wheels came off, and I feel like I’m sitting beside a pile of smoking machinery in a ditch going “…huh. Not dead, but that pretty much sucked.”

Trying to get back on track in the remaining three days would be stressful and, I think, impossible; at the same time, “I’m throwing up my hands and saying ‘to hell with it’” doesn’t seem like a justifiable reason to ask for fruit. I’m declaring September a washout and am working on regrouping for October instead.

Phooey. Hope y’all are doing better.

It is taking some super extra hard effort, but I’m finally turning it around :) That said, I can’t wait until next month so I have more achievable rules! This whole 5am wake-up is NOT idea of a good morning. 6am is doable, but 5 is just torture! I feel like a zombie all morning, and then again in the mid afternoon, regardless of when I go to sleep at night.

I am engaging in productive procrastination.

I had an idea for a project. I’m good at finding where people are having difficulties and figuring out how to help them work through or around those difficulties. In my search for a particular web site about home/life management, I found a lot of posts from people asking for alternatives to FlyLady, and it seemed that most of the complaints stemmed from an inability to personalize the system. (Some were more about her attitude, the volume of e-mails, the non-organization of the web site, and other more practical concerns.)

I thought that what I could do is develop a method that will help people personalize these kinds of systems – help them figure out what will work for them, so that they can be successful and finally feel in control of their lives.

So I am gathering some information to help me do this. I would really appreciate it if some of you lovely people would be willing to go and fill out the survey here: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet/viewform?hl=en_US&formkey=dFhGUjFrLThzcEZLQjcwMmdBNEROd2c6MQ#gid=0

Feel free to share the link with anyone else you think might like to be involved. I’m looking at everything here, from what systems are out there to what works and what doesn’t, from what format would be best to whether or not people would be willing to test things out as I develop this method.

Thanks everyone!

:) karalianne

Yeah, it’s just hard to find another boy to be his friend. I don’t want to get a really little guy because Batman is so large. I almost had someone on Sunday, but the person basically flaked on me. I’ve been looking at Kijiji and replied to an ad but have had no reply to that message. The SPCA only has a 2mo boy, which is too little – Batman’s as long as my arm, and a 2mo baby will fit in my hand still. If I have to buy from the pet store, I will, but I would rather give one a home who really needs it.

handee is fruit-hungry.

Heart.full.16 11 · 6,933 pts

I lost 2 life points because of the following things…
  • Drank 3.0 alcoholic drinks
  • Didn't do the custom thing

Some of my rules are hard, but really worthwhile (drinking less, avoiding snacks, etc.). Others are hard but actually I’m doing “other stuff” that’s just as good or better (e.g., if I do a Zumba class, I don’t feel up to doing the pressups, and an hour of aerobic beats 15 mins of pressups any day even though skipping the pressups cost me life).

Next month, I’m going to keep up the hard-but-worthwhile, and come up with some rules for diet & exercise that keep me active but don’t constrain me to eating or doing particular stuff.

This month, however, I’m going to run out of life. So please fruit me:)
