Oops…then comes a day when you don’t know xhat you want to create and thus how to answer the question.
Finally I did The Work on that. That experience revealed to be a different kind of helpful. I wasn’t reacting and The Work didn’t feel like a quick fix (it’s not a fix).

This was an interesting day. With the student exchange, annual student comic book (I’m working in the editorial comitee) and my personal stuff, I have more paperwork than ever.
…paperwork, ugh!
But that day I started to create something relaxing, easygoing with paperwork.
I’m proud to say that my mom (who, thanks to many patient years of efforts from her kids) successfully resolved a software problem. It was preventing her from sending back a form with her signature on it.😊

I changed my morning question. Instead of asking myself “how do you feel?”, I now ask myself “What do I want to create ?”.

How did the change happen? Well thanks to Sarah talking about Switch, I started reading self books again. I was thinking about some big issue I had when I picked up Fearless by Steve Chandler. Tess from our last Habit Course had kindly sent me her copy and until now I hadn’t checked it out.

That’s when it clicked. Steve Chandler was talking about reacting vs creating and thus the question: What do I want to create?
Asking how I feel seems great but I usually wonder about that when I’m not happy. I don’t think I pause and think when I’m happy, joyful or content. I do. I create. Anyway that’s what I observed by doing this habit for now 5 months (time flies😝).

March has been bizarre month for me. I lost two habits (for now) but the remaining one really stuck (I think).
I don’t report much at Health Month these days either I know. Weird month I tell you. But i feel quite satisfied with myself. I never maintained a habit, any habit, for such a long time before. On top of that, I had more than one to cope with!

Ouf! Have you heard of the Quebec student strike?
…and I can’t access internet on my phone because I already went over my quota. Thanks SarahM for the fruit.

P.S. No have not heard of the strike – does it relate to fees etc?

:) KareenP

Yes, the strike is about tuition fees. The gvt wants an annual raise of 300$ per year during 5 years. It is still manageable for us but it will be tough for the next generation. School is really weird these days.

On other matters, thanks again for the fruit! I finally got Made to Stick and I’m waiting for Switch (seems even more interesting).

This is a major change – in Germany and the Netherlands we are still very fortunate to have very low tuition fees. In the UK they drastically increased it as well.

Anyway, glad that you got interested in the Switch book, I really like it. I have not read the Made to Stick book – I did you find that?

Bisous,
Sarah

I am not done listening to Made to Stick but so far Switch seems more interesting…then again I haven’t listened to it closely enough.

The strike is on until Monday for now, then we have to vote to continue or to stop. We got the support of students from China and from Belgium.

Failing at habit creating is useful.
2 days ago I was working with dangerous fumes stressing out to finish homework. It took a massive headache to make me stop running …and restart doing good things for myself like drinking water!

Well done Kareen! Especially after Bikram Yoga water tastes so delicious. I finally bought a filter jug to even enjoy the water more! And it is an incentive to drink more water, as I try to empty the jug ;-)

Study time finally, yay! I have to say that the daily journal section in the Daily Tracker app entraces me: it is so much easier to dissect my thoughts with audio recordings and little sumarizing sentences of my thoughts.

Today I am also surprised to see how my habits have grown since. Especially the one in the morning. When I feel too anxious to sleep soundly, I simply start by breathing consciously. Then, when I’m relaxed enough, I do the rest of my morning habit:

1. I ask myself how am I doing?
2. I record my answer and a sentence or two pops up that I feel I need to do The Work on.

I think that what I like the most is the time I set appart to quietly ask myself questions and…to realize that I had the answers all along as well.
And I used to have so much trouble with this habit!!!
I still do sometimes in fact…but those hard times thought me A LOT about myself.
Like the fact that whenever I feel the extremes (really☺ or really😞) I tend to steer AWAY from this habit.
Gratitude is just as hard to express as pain and sufferring. I simply don’t feel the need to express it in words…but on the other hand doing so feels great and is just downright healthy for me.

Hi Kareen,

Thanks for sharing your experience. I really like your idea of thoughts with audio recordings. I think I asked you that before but when you record it, do you go back and listen to it or how do you go about it? I feel that I need to write it down, as my thoughts can be all over the place and writing it down helps me to focus and to distance myself from it all.

And regarding the breathing – I only started to realise now, how little I did know and practice good breathing. Yoga has tought me a lot in the last weeks on this.

And I really want to start a “Doing the Work” habit but somehow resist that. Do you have any tips of how I could make that happen? That would be really great.

Bisous,
Sarah

Dear Sarah,
Sorry for the late answer. I was trying all day to find a good spot to relax and write a lengthy answer…oh well!
I listen to my recordings during those days that I really don’t feel like wording out my feelings (remember, that’s when I feel the extremes).
Other than that I seldom listen to them. I think I would like for soe time to pass begore really going back.
Yoga is indeed AWESOME to understand breathing. I agree. Used to love practicing yoga for precisely this reason.
Tips for starting a “The Work habit”…I can tell you how I came to do recordings? Maybe it’ll help. I have been trying to keep a daily journal for years now and when planning my The Work habit I simply ask myself what I liked about it (and would keep) and what I didn’t like or resist AND WHY (and would change). The Why was important so I could find a solution. So here goes my list :
- i don’t like to write my feelings from the get go. At first, there is too many thoughts quarelling for me pause and write. I prefer to concentrate on calmimg myself down first by breathing and talking and then after asking myself precise questions I can write.
- I love asking myself questions. That’s why I love The Work so much. Actually, my first question after breathing consciously is : “How do I feel?” and this question helps me dig out the dirt (in a matter of speaking). Also, the feeling that your Truth comes from you is …well like none other.
There are other to feel that of course. So I suggest that you listen to your resistance and to what you like. Both feelings might be point out exactly what they are reacting to…and you’ll make awesome discoveries for yourself!
Was this helpful ? Did I miss something?
