KareenP, in the Yellow Bracket, played Saturday January, 14th for 36 points, following 25% of her 4 rules. She lost 2 life points for missing the following: check my agenda and do my mit list every evening every day, draw for 5 minutes at least 6 times a week. Her public review of the day was…

Yeah ok it looks like I’ve stumbled again but I think it will be alright.

One thing I learned this week is not to panic when things aren’t going quite your way. Panic numbs my imagination. I can’t find solutions, adapt or readjust when I am panicking.

So far, I have found a way to get to my drawing homework by listening to audiobooks. To stimulate my evening habit by making it a challenge.

In 30 minutes I have to :

Visualize how I want my next day to be (5 minutes)
Choose my clothes for the next day
Prepare my bags (maximum two light bags)
Check my agenda
Establish my MITs (max 2).

My morning habit is the healthiest right now so no change is necessary.

My drawing habit is in planning mode until Jan 29. I need to do The Work on this sentence : “I am too tired to draw.” Self talk is a hard thing to monitor when it goes against you.

Kareen, can you ever be too tired unless you literally fall asleep while drawing? ;-)

:) KareenP

Sure! Actually I forgot to do the Work on the reverse statement: i am not too tired. I f I had your suggestion would definetely pop out as an example of “I am too tired being true for me”. Thanks for reminding me!

:) KareenP

I feel like adding a quick explanation here. What I like about doing The Work is that it frees me from those generalizing thoughts : I am too…, She is…, etc. Once I agree with one sentence I spiral down the road to self doubt and gloominess. My mind will simply find more examples to make that sentence I just agree on truthful. However, everything change. I can be too tired to go to school but not too tired to draw at home.

Hi Kareen, Wow, that sounds really good. I love your “The Work” habit and really appreciate that you share your experience about it here. And great morning and evening rituals too!
Have a nice week!
Bisous,

Actually the week started to look up from this tome on because I figured how to motivate myself for drawing : I listen to audiobooks while I draw. It’s just heavenly…and all of a sudden all the habits settled just fine.

:) SarahM

The audiobooks are such a good idea. What are you listening too at the moment?

Bonjour Sarah!
It’s nothing inspirational. Laurell Hamilton’s novels about a vampire hunter, Alan Bradley’s novels and right now, Pretty Little Liars.

How about making the novel-reading a reward for doing your MITs?
So you’d have to do the MITs first, and not let yourself read until you’re done with MITs.

School, here I come. sigh Motto : Small easy steps.

:) Cat

Hi Kareen,

I like your motto! Small easy steps :-)
I wish you fun at school, and great teachers who make learning fun!

By the way, how do you cross out a word?

Cheers,
Cat

:) MaryAnn

to cross out a word, you put a hyphen just before the word (or phrase), and another one just after it.

Like this, except without a space between the hyphen & the word you want to cross out:

- hyphens framing something, will cross it out -
IF you take out the spaces:
hyphens framing something, will cross it out

:) MaryAnn

This kind of crossing-out often happens unintentionally – by mistake!
I’m not sure that Kareen meant to cross out her “sigh” :-)

:) KareenP

Hi Cat, Mary Ann!
Mary Ann is right on the money! I did not intend to cross my “sigh”.
Thanks for your wish Cat! I do intend to have fun at school!

How about itallics italics?

:) MaryAnn

Italics…?
Welllllll…

You make italics by typing an “underscore” just before the word (or phrase), and another one just after it — sort of like this:

_ an underscore framing something, will italicize it _

But WITHOUT the spaces between the underscore & the word/phrase —

an underscore framing something, will italicize it

Feeling rested. I think that worry, more than anything else, tires me.
Starting school tomorrow.
My drawing habit planning is puzzling me everyday. It’s a fun and scary ride that I try to get distracted from quite often. I need one more week at least to plan. Honestly I am impressed I got through December with my 2 previous habits. December was tough on consistency and motivation.
I think my motivation for taking the ride at all is the reason why it works for me right now : small easy steps.
Yep. I have found my new motto. Think small super easy steps. That’s how you take mountains.😏

I have a little framed Chinese proverb in my office:
“To get through the hardest journey, we need take only one step at a time…but we must keep on stepping”.

That’s a little different take from Lao Tzu’s “A long journey begins with a single step”.

Small easy steps… Great motto!

I stumbled upon www.success.org today and listened to Steve Jobs’ speech, read a few posts, etc. At first I thought, this is good stuff, I should listen to these kind of stuff before doing my morning habit.
Yeah right.
Realization : it takes a lot of guts to face your own thoughts. I realized that I’d rather listen to someone else sometimes than to myself and if I wasn’t already fed up about self help speeches, I would have fallen for it yet again. although my habit is to listen to my self talk the temptation is there.
Oh, don’t get me wrong : www.success.org is great. In fact, it lead to another thing that want to work on : fighting against competition. Before reading it I would say that I don’t enjoy competing or I prefer to compete with myself…blablabla. Sure. One of the things I experienced by doing The Work is : I didn’t find an absolutely true statement yet. I keep searching though. But that’s not it. Same thing for the reversed version : I prefer to compete with others or I enjoy competing.
So in the end my soul simply drops both statements and feels lighter in a truth that eludes dogmas, words, concepts…get it?
This brings me back to Steve Jobs speech in the Youtube video when he says (paraphrasing) not to imprison yourself in dogmas, etc. Easier said than done but hey, one morning in Habitland at a time right?

Just new here and browsing the game wall, and I think I know what you mean about listening to others’ thoughts (so easy! and easy to pretend that it is getting you somewhere!) versus facing your own. I am trying to do the same by making a habit of writing in my journal. Anyway, good observations. I hope this month and year go well for you.

Thank you Allison and welcome to our group! I renew my wish of a great year 2012 for you. I personally admire your endeavour. I love writing but the easiest for me right now is to record my self talk, out loud.

Kareen, I enjoyed your thoughtful post. Esp: “Realization : it takes a lot of guts to face your own thoughts. …”
Yes, it does. And I struggle with not just reading, reading, reading, and start thinking for myself.
I’m 58. Is there hope?

Kareen, are you making audio recordings of yourself to record self talk?

Thanks, hahaha. and, yes, I make audio recordings of my self talk. I tried writing morning pages more than once. This is easier.

@seth

Sorry! The correct address is www.zenhabits.com? Somehow it is related to success.org (see address bar once you’ve clicked). Sorry for the confusion. The original post about www.zenhabits.com is from another Habiteer, Danielle Withrow. Thanks for noticing!
