buster, in the Orange Bracket, played Friday March, 18th for 64 points, following 100% of his 4 rules. He didn't lose any life points and therefore got 1 piece of fruit for the hard work. His public review of the day was…

Worked from noisy, dark, crowded Vito’s after Niko was in bed. Was awesome, actually.

Funny, during a very stressful time when I was camped out in a quiet Shock Trauma hospital room, I would walk down to Baltimore’s indoor Lexington Market and the racket would sooth me.

This is a tough month. Momentum is flagging since the new year, winter is getting to us, it feels like March is the low point of the year on the motivational front. Any ideas for kickstarting some inspiration and excitement for April?

:) rockyroxyro

Hopefully as the weather starts to get better, the lot of us will start feeling more motivated. I’m just starting to come out of my late winter funk and am really looking forward to Spring.

:) ocherdraco

I was thinking of trying to figure out a way to integrate some charitable aspect for my team. The more team points we get, the more money that goes to charity, etc. I can’t bankroll it all myself, though, and haven’t figured out a way to arrange it so everyone could contribute.

:) susanlindsey

Always wondered why March/April are lows. Makes no sense, days are getting longer, it’s warming up, signs of spring everywhere…???

:) goodwolve

I think of it all as cycles – there is an ebb and flow – and if this is a lower productivity/motivation month that is ok and it will change.

:) keithters

I think a lot of the rut comes from the mild (or not so mild) seasonal affective disorder that i think everyone has to some extant. I’m planning on adding some more “do stuff outside” kinds of rules to get out if it fast.

i was also going to try to organize my rules in phases somehow to motivate myself for later in the summer. Something like, “The 6-pack by September plan phasee 1,” or “quit soda by June.” Sort of like a step-up or step-down program. Maybe for April we can get people to begin longer term health journeys?

Draw energy from the weather. We know it’ll warm up and get nicer day by day, so pay attention to it and use the good days to power into the not-so-good days.

buster, in the Orange Bracket, played Friday March, 11th for 46 points, following 75% of his 4 rules. He lost 1 life point for missing the following: allow 7 alcoholic drinks a week. His public review of the day was…

Did my co-op games panel, which was well received. Had a celebratory drink at the Hilton bar, then headed to Elysium and Side Bar for more talks and reuniting, then had a few free tacos and met up with Rick and others at Lovejoy’s. Gonna need some life points after all this drinking.

I’m testing out a somewhat drastic method of trying to reduce the spam from people trying to play the game incorrectly. Certain words are now banned from being used, as I’ve been feeling like certain people are hassling others unnecessarily.

Let me know if you notice bad side effects of this change. It’s not a permanent change… just a stop-gap until I implement a better way to weed out the people who are not playing the game as it was intended.

If you have no idea what I’m talking about here… no worries.

Anyone here going to Austin this Friday for SXSW Interactive? I’ll be there Friday and Saturday…

Let’s do it! Are there any events on Friday that any of you know that you’re going to? I’m sort of playing it by ear but know that that is no way to actually see people.

:) ian

My whole plan for non-work SXSW is to hang out with people I like. Which probably means some kind of catch up with y’all :)

Thanks for the stop-gapping, Buster! I am nowhere near SXSW (staying home in Silicon Valley) – everyone, please have a margarita for me. Unless of course that is outside your Health Month rules.

Damn, now I wish I was going. I have no idea what you speak of, but I suspect that’s because I’m on a team. I almost never check the wall outside of the team wall.

Very nice! I just tested it with the annoyance that’s been plaguing the Spoonies. Unfortunately people will probably misspell the word “sp——r” or something, so it IS just a stopgap.

:) liene

I would totally give your stopgap measure some fruit if it were ever in need. Also, a hug.

:) ocherdraco

The stopgap does highlight a need for a way to share applications with other team members though. Right now, because of the stopgap, you can’t link to them directly on the game wall, which isn’t very good for people who are legitimately appealing to people they know.

:) mrbravo

Man, I totally missed missed chattin w/ you Buster, I was there this weekend! You gonna be there this weekend? I will be but only for Sat & Sun…

:) buster

@Rodrigo – I was only there for 2 days… back now. Next time!

@Margaret – You’re right. Perhaps you could find a way to phrase it without the particular word, and then link to profiles? I definitely need to find a better way to handle this, though.

:) ocherdraco

Can you rig up something like the appeal for fruit? When you apply for… erm, patronage, there could be an option in the process to share your application on the game wall. If a person chooses not to share their application, a link to do so could appear on their profile, which will disappear once the option is used.

The text could look something like this:

Margaret Maloney (ocherdraco) is applying for patronage for April. 8 · 2,359 pts · MetaFilter She wants to be patronized because…

I love Health Month!

Bracket: Green Bracket
Her rules: No alcohol, No caffeine, Exercise for 30 minutes at least 6 days a week, Eat raw fruit every day

Patronize this person
:) ocherdraco

I meant to add that even with this kind of setup, it might be best to keep the stopgap up, so long as there was an easy way to code the sharing option around it.

:) ocherdraco

Well, that didn’t take long. Someone figured out a workaround and has been spamming the game wall for Sponsorship. (I’m not sure why that gets around the workaround, but it does.)

:) pelly

I was just asked by a random stranger about “spnsorship.” Nice. Not sure how you can get around misspelled versions though. As the end of the month approaches, the irritation level rises. Sigh.
